| | Wee Ben's Train Set, Celidh Minogue | ] | I don't really have a city I associate myself with, or a place particularly. Other than living with Mark, and it wouldn't matter where for that, the closest I have is my Mum's house in Marden, Kent. We moved there when I was about 11/12 I guess. So she's been there for 27 years.
Mum put the house on the market last week and has already had an offer for the full asking price. This on a weak market. She won't be moving out of the village, but still I have warm feelings for that house. It was built in 1829, on the site of another house. She's moving to a house costing about £125,000($245,000) less. Still that should help for any more holidays she wants, and deserves.
I do feel a bit lost about this, even though I am pleased and think it's a good idea. |

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed.
1) Look at the list and bold those you have read. 2) Italicise those you intend to read 3) Underline the books you LOVE. 4) Strike out the ones you thought SUCKED.

I seem to be losing the ability to speak English at work, I blame Ajax/Javascript. But responding "Burr-errr!" to the question "My web browser is broken again." isn't very professional.

| Big news in the PCB software industry. |
[Jun. 18th, 2008|09:06 am] |
“Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDNS), today announced that it submitted a proposal to the Board of Directors of Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) to acquire Mentor Graphics for $16.00 per share in cash. Cadence's all-cash proposal, which is not subject to any financing condition, represents a 30% premium over the closing price of Mentor Graphics common stock on June 16, 2008, the last trading day prior to public disclosure of Cadence's proposal, a 59% premium over the closing price of Mentor Graphics common stock on May 2, 2008, when Cadence presented the terms of the proposal to Mentor Graphics, and a 46% premium over Mentor Graphics' average closing price for the past 30 trading days. The transaction price represents a total enterprise value of $1.6 billion on a fully diluted basis, which reflects Mentor Graphics' net debt of $69 million.”
This affects my company a fair bit. We do have both sets of software, but we are a lot more embedded with Mentor Graphics' stuff. It is a bit like Apple taking over Microsoft, or visa versa.

Over the weekend, we saw a couple of Suffolk Punches on Parker's Piece in Cambridge. ( Horsey Pics ) Also, we saw a Red Kite, and have been disturbed by the sounds of our resident Song Thrush destroy snails on our path. |

By mistake we've ordered some small caps at work and I mean small they are ridiculous.
100 micrometers by 50 micrometres. We've decided to use them to calibrate our micrometers.

Baby born free of hereditary gene peril thanks to controversial screening.
I've mixed feelings about this. I can fully understand why parents would do this. Wanting the best for your child is hardly a crime, and we happily(or not) abort thousands of foetuses a year.
But of course, personally, I feel odd when I have a very good life with medium severity NF1, as do thousands of others in the UK alone. |

| Computer Games I like and why. |
[May. 9th, 2008|11:50 am] |

| | calm | ] | This is a list of my favourite computer games in recent times.
Mass Effect Bioshock Half Life 2 etc Portal Okami GTA IV Ratchet And Clank Destruction
Aside from Portal, and R+K maybe and even with these games to some extent the thing I really love is a good story. I've never been able to get into GTA games before, I found the controls too annoying, the driving and shooting just not quite good enough to be worthwhile. Ok they have improved the driving and the shooting in GTA so as to be not painful, however the big thing is, I care about Niko. He might be a murdering ex war criminal, but I care about him.
Mass Effect had many flaws, and floors too. And very annoying lifts to get between them. But the story was excellent, and the ending superb. Once again, had the plot not been up to muster I would probably have gone meh.
The same can be said with the others I've mentioned, even R+K and Portal. I do also use driving games, but that's more like turning my brain off.
Previously there was Baldur's Gate I and II.
This post is apropos of nothing, but isn't that what journaling is about? Anyway, what do others look for in games? |
